How to get a high ranking on search engines: Backlinks
What are backlinks?
Firstly you’ll need to know what they are in order to appreciate how they work and how valuable they are to your website. Backlinks are quite literally links that lead web users back to your website. Google and the other major search engines count the amount and quality of links to your site from other sites and use it, along with many other things to rank your page’s importance. This will determine how high up in the search terms you appear. Getting back links is very important indeed.
Who should I link to?
You should try to obtain backlinks from websites that are highly ranked with Google and those that are closely associated with your website and what you sell etc. For example, if you operate a website selling bird seed then you would want a backlink from a site that perhaps sold birdcages, or even birds.
However, it’s not all about relevant sites or even high ranking sites. These are obviously the best, but there are websites out there that are used primarily by website owners to build backlinks and they are incredibly useful to the average web user too. These are called article directories.

Article directories rely on user input. They accept submissions by professionals and those with knowledge on their chosen subjects, to write articles that are of some use to the reader. The major benefit of these directories to the writer/website owner is that they get to put a link to their site at the bottom of their article or even links within the text to get links back to their website. This is an extremely effective way of getting good quality backlinks.
Other ways to get good backlinks
There are several other ways in which you can get good backlinks:
- Ask other websites that are relevant to yours to do a link exchange. You put a link to them and them to you.
- Comments on blog posts that pertain to your website is another way to get a good link; as long as you don’t spam them.
- Forum posting allows you to comment on various issues you know about on the right forums and it allows you add what is called a signature strip at the bottom of your comment where people can find out who you are, what you do, and what your website is.
- Social networking is another way to get good links. If you can get people to retweet your posts on Twitter and have your website address on your profiles of every social networking tool you use, this is yet another great tool.
To conclude
If you use all of the above methods to get backlinks you will see a remarkable improvement in your overall page rank and visitors to your website. It’s not hard to do either, or alternatively you could employ a writer to do this for you, and perhaps even promote you on forums and social networks. The more links the better.
