‘Contactless’ named as one of the top words of 2014

Popularity of new payment service has seen it become a top buzz word of the year.

Whether you’re in Cupertino or Camden, contactless is the buzz phrase on everyone’s lips, so much so in fact that it has been named as one of the Oxford Dictionary’s words of the year.

Contactless missed out on being crowned word of the year to the highly popular ‘vape’; the act of inhaling and exhaling the vapour produced by an electronic cigarette or similar device.

After a pretty tepid launch, with both retailers and consumers reluctant to start using contactless payments, 2014 saw the touch-and-go term making headlines locally and globally thanks mainly to the likes of TfL and Apple.

The capital’s transport network was the perfect testing ground for contactless tech; millions of people making low value payments at high speeds and with with over 12 million contactless journeys recorded since launch, it’s safe to say it’s been a huge success with commuters.

Apple, of course, launched its highly anticipated Apple Pay service back in October. This cardless payment system is built in to the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus models, making it quicker and easier than ever before to pay for your Starbucks while half awake!

Contactless card machines booming!

We’ve been talking a lot on our own blog about contactless payments after we introduced the latest range of Ingenico card terminals which feature the new technology as standard.

We were aware when introducing these that not every business would benefit from the tap and go service, but the uptake has been unbelievable and we’ve been selling hundreds of these card machines every month.

Customers, particularly retailers, are really starting to get on board with the tech now that customers are expecting to be able to pay with just a tap or swipe of their card.

If you’re thinking of getting a contactless terminal here are just some of the benefits you can expect to see, based on the feedback we’re getting from our merchants:

  • Shorter queuing times

  • Faster customer turnaround
  • Huge boost in small value payments
  • Increase in card spend per customer
